Dancer-turned-actor/playwright, Jon's recent lead and supporting roles include the short films With Robert; Jaywalkers; Almost; Picking Up The Pieces; Internal; and Joaquin. Mr. Spano recently appeared as “Steve” in Tennessee Williams' Small Craft Warnings with Regeneration Theatre. He recently played "Tokio," the boxing trainer, and “Eddie Fuseli,” the mobster, in two consecutive productions of Clifford Odetts' Golden Boy. Jon also played the dual role of "Inspector Sinclair / Big Sexy" in Certifiably Yours, a farce staged by Emerging Artists at TADA!.

Jon danced professionally for fifteen years and performed in a dozen musicals on tour, in Europe, at the Public Theatre (Peggy and Jackson), and at Duo Theatre in New York. Jon studied acting with Sanford Meisner and William Alderson and is an alumnus of NYU. Dog fanatic, chef, Bikram yoga practitioner, member of The Dramatists Guild and Best Friends Animal Shelter.

As playwright, Jon's new play DENNIS opened to standing ovations in its first presentation at Theatre 54 in April, 2018. Dennis is aimed for its next-level production in 2019. Sebastian, his latest play, is a prequel to Suddenly Last Summer. Jon's dance play JOEY VARIATIONS (semi-finalist at both Lark Play Development Center and the O’Neill Playwrights Conference) was an award-winning hit at the 2016 New York Fringe Festival.

His short plays The Sweat; Ripple Effect; 8th Wonder; and Second Son have been winners and finalists at several festivals. Many of his plays have been published by Smith & Kraus. Jon is developing screenplays based on his plays Joey Variations and Muskego Lake.

Emerging Artists Theatre Announces Lineup For Spark Theatre Festival NYC

Emerging Artists Theatre (EAT) is kicking off their 30th anniversary season by changing the name of their bi-annual New Work Series to Spark Theatre Festival NYC. The company will also return to premiering new works Off-Broadway in Fall 2023.

New Play DENNIS by Jon Spano to Begin Performances in March

Playwright Jon Spano explores one man's personal struggle to reinvent his identity in the face of mortality in his new play Dennis. Directed by Aaron Salazar and starring Patrick Boyd, with original music by Manuel Pelayo and Giancarlo Bonfanti, this contemporary story about finding connection through self-discovery will play Theatre 54 at Shetler Studios & Theatres (244 West 54th Street), for a limited engagement from March 26 through April 5. StoPD and Shetler Studios present Golden Boy, written by Clifford Odets and directed by Aaron Latham.  Staged at Gleason's Gym, the world famous boxing mecca that contributed to inspiring Odets back in 1937, this full scale production will be the first time Golden Boy will be presented in a site-specific setting with original equipment and ring from 1940s-50s.  This production is a fundrasing event for two non-profit organizations: The Michael J. Fox Foundation and stoPD (Support and Training to Overcome Parkinson's Disease). This revival of Odets' masterpiece will be directed by Aaron Latham, author of the films Urban Cowboy, The Program and the Broadway musical Urban Cowboy.  Mr. Latham has been living with Parkinson's disease for several years.  At age 72, this production is his theatrical directorial debut. This unique production will also feature professional actors who are living with Parkinson's in some of the main roles. A tribute to the Parkinson's community and a testament to its strength and potential.
