Born October 15, 1902 in Saitama Prefecture, Kawakami Reidō (Kawakami Gentarō) studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Takano Muneshige. He started teaching in 1933. He belonged to the Shūfū-kai and was active in the shakuhachi world for more than 40 years.
