Dashboard plugin.

For my end of studies project, I'm supposed to develop a plugin on Cacti (version 0.8.8g) that offers those fonctionalities :
- A user defined Dashboard : Choose a report and report measurand in order to put it on a TOP N board (it also may be presented as a camemebert). NB: N is a used defined parameter.
- Reporting of the Dashboard via email.
I'm new to php and Cacti.
Although, what I'm doing right now is modifiing reportit plugin code to ensure the fonctionalities quoted abose. Am I on the right way?
Please can anyone help me and explain more for me how to develop such a plugin.
