The January TCS concert series features Sibelius' Symphony No. 5, a piece commissioned by the composer's native country, Finland, in honor of his own fiftieth birthday. Of this piece, Sibelius wrote, "it is as if God Almighty had thrown down pieces of a mosaic for heaven’s floor and asked me to find out what was the original pattern."
TCS is thrilled to present two world premieres for this concert series. Flutist Michelle Stockman performs Michael Colina's Isles of Shoals on Saturday. Both concerts open with I-35 by TCS member, composer, and violist Eric Lemmon.
Friday's concert welcomes back violinist Deborah Nixon as she returns to the stage to perform the Saint-Saëns' Violin Concerto No. 3 on Friday's concert.

Pelham Bay Park in The Bronx, the largest park in NYC (even the new Freshkills Park on Staten Island won’t be larger), is a bit unknowable in its entirety but boasts ancient oak trees, sprawling bays, a reclaimed sanitation site (now welcome grasslands), salt marshes, “coast of Maine” rocky outcroppings, and Robert Moses’ Orchard Beach. Hunter Island is actually no longer an island, but was joined to the mainland at the time Orchard Beach was built. Bring your lunch. We will picnic by the Long Island Sound overlooking the Execution Rocks Lighthouse.

Michelle Stockman is a flutist and piccolo player from New England who enjoys an active career in New York City. Praised for her sensitivity and versatility, she is principal flutist of LoftOpera and a freelancer with groups such as American Ballet Theater, New York City Opera, Philharmonia Orchestra of New York (PONY), and The Chelsea Symphony. Passionate about flute pedagogy and music education, she is a dedicated private instructor and previously served on faculty at The Fort Lee School of …
Violinist Deborah Nixon is an active freelancer and educator currently based in New York City. A keen ensemble player, she has performed in various ensembles in the area, including the Bronx Opera, Mimesis Ensemble, and The Chelsea Symphony, with which she appeared as soloist in 2015. Also a dedicated educator, she is on faculty at several schools in the NYC area and maintains a private studio.

Reuben Blundell has been a Chelsea Symphony conductor/violinist since 2012, enjoying collaborations with musicians, soloists, composers and other conductors. Conducting Aaron Dai’s The Night Before Christmas, first with B. D. Wong then Annie Golden narrating, he initiated, conducted and edited (in Premiere Pro) the orchestra’s 2020 remote performance, narrated by John Lithgow.
